Arturo Gatti Found Dead in Brazil Hotel

Sunday July 12, 2009
Former champ and fan favorite Arturo Gatti was found dead in his room at a seaside hotel in Porto de Galihnas, Brazil. Gatti, 37, had arrived at the resort the previous day with his Brazilian wife and 1-year-old son. Police are investigating the cause of death but 'foul play' is reportedly suspected. Gatti's wife and son were unhurt.

Gatti, best known for his memorable trilogy with Micky Ward, retired in 2007 with a career record of 40-9 with 31 knockouts.

Update: Gatti's wife, 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues, has been detained as a suspect in the former champ's death after contradictions in her interrogation. Reports indicate Gatti had a head injury and may have been strangled with the strap of a blood-stained purse which was found at the scene.

More on this tragedy as additional details become available.

Floyd Mayweather: Out of Money?

Saturday July 4, 2009
Is Floyd Mayweather Jr. returning to boxing because he misses the limelight? Perhaps he feels he's still the best fighter in the world and wants to defend his pound-for-pound title? Or could it be that he's broke and needs the cash? The right answer may be "all of the above".

Despite claims by Mayweather's management that Pretty Boy has no money problems, public records show him owing nearly $6.4 million: a tax lien of $6.17 for unpaid taxes in 2007, New Jersey state taxes of $193,000 in 2007, unresolved debts worth $9,400 to three homeowners associations, $3,900 to a contractor that programmed electronics at one of his houses, and $320 to his trash collector.

Team Mayweather can try to spin this story any way they want, but it sure sounds like a money problem.

Wednesday July 1, 2009
Hall of Famer Alexis Arguello died earlier today at his residence in Managua, Nicaragua. Initial reports indicate that Arguello's death resulted from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Arguello compiled a professional record of 82-8 with 65 KOs during a career which began in 1968 and didn't end until 1995! While he won titles at featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight, Arguello is best remembered for his two classic - but ultimately unsuccessful - title fights at 140 pounds against Aaron Pryor in 1982 and 1983. Arguello's biggest wins came against Ruben Olivares, Alfredo Escalera, Bazooka Limon, Bobby Chacon and Ray Mancini.

Arguello was a national hero in his native Nicaragua. He carried the country's flag at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was the mayor of Managua, the nation's capital city, at the time of his death.
