Like Father, Like Daughter

Sunday August 24, 2003
With her dad in attendance, Laila Ali made good on her pre-fight prediction by pounding Christy Martin into submission over four one-sided rounds. The Coal Miner's Daughter has been the biggest name in women's boxing for years but she's ten years older, six inches shorter and (usually) at least a dozen pounds lighter than the Greatest's daughter. It's clear that Ali was the superior fighter. What's not so clear is where the sport of women's boxing goes from here. Now that the novelty has worn off and the two biggest names have squared off, there's really not much left to try and sell to the general public. Laila Ali vs. Lucia Rijker anyone?
