Julio Cesar Gonzalez became the first man to defeat Dariusz Michalczewski by outpointing the heavily favored German in front of his hometown fans. Gonzalez won the WBO light-heavyweight title and prevented Michalczewski from matching Rocky Marciano's record of 49-0. Two judges scored the fight 116-112 for Gonzalaez.
