Gonzalez Hands Michalczewski First Loss

Tuesday October 21, 2003
Julio Cesar Gonzalez became the first man to defeat Dariusz Michalczewski by outpointing the heavily favored German in front of his hometown fans. Gonzalez won the WBO light-heavyweight title and prevented Michalczewski from matching Rocky Marciano's record of 49-0. Two judges scored the fight 116-112 for Gonzalaez. The third judge was from Germany so he had Michalczewski ahead 115-113. Surprised? Don't be. That's exactly why Roy Jones always refused to go to Germany to challenge Michalczewski on his home turf.
