Tarver Aims to Shock Roy Jones
Tuesday November 4, 2003
Antonio Tarver believes he will shock the boxing world on Saturday night and defeat boxing's reigning pound-for-pound champion, Roy Jones Jr. Tarver and Jones have a lot more in common than just their Florida roots. As 13-year-old amateurs, Jones defeated Tarver for the gold medal in the 90-pound division at Florida's Sunshine State Games. Tarver also credits watching Jones during the 1988 Olympics with motivating him to return to the sport after giving it up for several years. And Tarver currently holds the WBC and IBF light heavy titles Jones vacated when he moved up to heavyweight to take John Ruiz's WBA title belt. Tarver believes it's his time to shine. Jones aims to prove he's still the king of the ring.
