Klitschko Faces Johnson; Eyes Lewis
Wednesday December 3, 2003
Vitali Klitschko and Kirk Johnson meet on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in an important heavyweight title eliminator. The winner might just be the fighter who is more focused on the man across the ring and less concerned with a possible match with Lennox Lewis. Both fighters are predicting victory with an eye on the "real" heavyweight title, but neither fighter is good enough to take anything for granted when facing a talented opponent. Johnson had been slated to fight Lewis on June 21, but pulled out with an injury. Klitschko stepped in as a late-replacement and gave Lewis all he could handle before finally being stopped in the sixth round because of severe cuts around his left eye.
