Joppy Wins Bet; Loses Bout
Monday December 15, 2003
By going the distance with Bernard Hopkins, William Joppy earned himself an additional $50,000 of Hopkins' money. Based on the pounding he took for 12 rounds and the condition of his face once the fight was over, that amount was not nearly enough to compensate Joppy for enduring the worst beating of his career in what could very well be his final fight. Let this bout serve as Exhibit A on why such bets should be prohibited -- they potentially provide a losing fighter with a dangerous incentive to continue to take unnecessary punishment.
