Trio of Fights Could Land at MSG
Wednesday February 25, 2004
Madison Square Garden, once the mecca of boxing, could land three big upcoming bouts ... or two ... or one ... or none. The proposed bouts are John Ruiz vs. Fres Oquendo for a heavyweight alpha-belt on April 17; Vitali Klitschko vs. Corrie Sanders for a slightly more legitimate heavyweight alpha-belt on April 24; and Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Paul Spadafora at 140 pounds on May 8. However, Spadafora already looks doubtful as state Athletic Commission is troubled by the fact that the former lightweight champ shot his girlfriend in the chest last October. Kudos to the NYSAC for the rare (in athletic commission circles) display of actually having a conscience.
