Morales Tops Gutsy Chavez
Wednesday March 3, 2004
Erik Morales earned a unanimous 12-round decision over Jesus Chavez to capture the WBC super featherweight championship ... but it wasn't easy. Chavez injured his right shoulder in the second round but gave a brave, one-handed effort the rest of the way. The judges scores of 118-108, 117-109 and 115-112 give no indication of just how competitive and entertaining this fight was. Morales' tendency to brawl - even when he could get by on boxing skills alone - continues to make him one of the sport's most entertaining fighters.
