Ali Captivates Baseball All-Stars
Wednesday July 14, 2004
Muhammad Ali assisted with the opening ceremonies at last night's major league baseball All-Star game in Houston and showed that he is still a star among stars. Derek Jeter admitted to being almost frozen with fear when he met Ali the day before. So imagine how Jeter felt when the former champ started throwing jabs at him in front of a sold out crowd and national television audience. Jeter quickly recovered and gathered the players around Ali for an impromptu photo opportunity, much like the All-Star tribute for Ted Williams in 1999. Predictably, the selection of Ali for the pre-game festivities was criticized by some - including Fall of Famer Bob Feller - who still resent Ali's stand against the Vietnam War.
