Corrales Stops Freitas in 10

Wednesday August 11, 2004
Diego "Chico" Corrales captured the WBO lightweight title with a 10th round stoppage of previously undefeated Acelino Freitas. Freitas dominated early with superior hand and foot speed but began to wear down in the later rounds and was floored in the eighth, ninth and tenth rounds. After the knockdown in the 10th, Freitas got up but indicated to referee Michael Ortega that he was not interested in continuing. The win puts Corrales in line for a big money fight with Erik Morales mentioned as a possible opponent.
