Dirrell Guarantees U.S. Second Boxing Medal

Thursday August 26, 2004
Middleweight Andre Dirrell edged Cuba's Yordani Despaigne 12-11 to advance to the medal round of the 2004 Olympics. Seven members of the U.S. team failed to reach the semifinals before Dirrell and Andre Ward scored upsets to guarantee that the U.S. will take home at least two medals. A gold medal would be the first for the U.S. since David Reid was the top light middleweight in Atlanta in 1996.
