Heavy Dose of Heavyweights

Thursday November 11, 2004
In a case of quantity over quality, ten heavyweights - all among the heavyweight top fifty - will square off in five bouts which should do a lot to clarify a division that desperately needs some clarification. On Saturday night at Madison Square Garden it will be Chris Byrd (#2) vs. Jameel McCline (#7); John Ruiz (#6) vs. Andrew Golota (#4); Hasim Rahman (#8) vs. Kali Meehan (#24); Evander Holyfield (#19) vs. Larry Donald (#32); and Oliver McCall (#40) vs. DaVarryl Williamson (#44). Don King is hoping that this card represents the first step towards a heavyweight unification tournament. Great idea, but until the man who currently sits atop the division - Vitali Klitschko - elects to take part, then such a tournament will only determine the most qualified challenger for the undisputed title. Nevertheless, a nearly unprecedented display of heavyweight action on a single fight card and - perhaps - the end of the road for Holyfield, the most consistently competitive and entertaining fighter of his generation.
