Gatti Stops Leija in Fifth

Sunday January 30, 2005
Arturo Gatti defended his WBC super lightweight title with a one-sided fifth round KO of durable veteran Jesse James Leija. Gatti was too big, too strong and too fast for the 38-year-old Leija and effectively used a stiff jab to set up his power shots. The end came when Gatti sent Leija to the canvas for a second time in the fifth and Leija couldn't beat the count. Gatti received $2 million for this bout but could be in line for a much richer payday in June if a long-discussed PPV battle with Floyd Mayweather finally comes to fruition.
