Max Schmeling Dies at 99
Friday February 4, 2005
German boxing legend Max Schmeling has died at age 99. Schmeling is best remembered for his two bouts with Joe Louis, which set off a propaganda war between the Nazi regime and the U.S. on the eve of World War II. Schmeling scored a 12th round KO of Louis on June 19, 1936. On June 22, 1938, Louis KO'd Schmeling in the first round on their rematch. Despite the politically charged atmpsphere surrounding their fights, Schmeling and Louis later became good friends. So good, in fact, that Schmeling - who did quite well in business after his fight career ended - quietly provided Louis with financial assistance in his later years and paid for his funeral in 1981.
