What Ever Happened to David Tua?

Wednesday February 9, 2005
There was a time in the mid-1990s when David Tua appeared to be the future of the heavyweight division. He was a likeable young fighter with a great chin and devastating power. Then his weight ballooned, his effectiveness in the ring diminished and now - at 32 - he seems have to disappeared. So where is Tua-man? In court in New Zealand, that's where. In an all-too-familar scene, Tua and his former managers are disputing where all the money went and who owes who what. It's still not too late for Tua to be a force in the heavyweight division and he's even got his first bout in two years tentatively slated for March 31 against Talmadge Griffis. However, as long as Tua is spending more time in court than in the gym, the prospects of him mounting a sustained, meaningful comeback appear slim.
