Cotto Stops Corley in Five Round Battle

From Andrew Eisele, About.com GuideFebruary 27, 2005

Follow me on:

Rising star Miguel Cotto defended his WBO junior welterweight title but it was far from easy. Former champ DeMarcus Corley was down in round one but came back to stagger Cotto early in the third with a big right hook. Corley, however, failed to capitalize on the opportunity and Cotto survived the round. Cotto resumed control of the fight the following round and dropped Corley again in round five. Shortly thereafter Corley took a knee to avoid further punishment and referee Ismael Quinones immediately stopped the bout. Cotto appeared on his way to victory but the stoppage was still premature.
