Vargas Victorious in Comeback

Sunday March 27, 2005
Former champ Fernando Vargas made his return from a 15 month layoff a successful one with a tougher-than-expected decision over Raymond Joval. Joval was the busier fighter throughout but demonstrated no power whatsoever. Vargas looked rusty at times but was by far the harder and more accurate puncher -- punch stats had Vargas tripling Joval's connect percentage (51% to 17%). The three judges scored the fight 98-92, 96-94 and 97-93. Vargas is hoping his next bout will be against Javier Castillejo in order to secure an alphabet title before deciding whether or not he has any interest in a rematch with either of the two fighters who have defeated him: Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya.
