Review: Contender Episode 12

Friday May 13, 2005
Episode 12 of NBC's boxing reality series "The Contender" wrapped up the second round of the tournament, leaving only four fighters still in the running for the $1 million prize. Jesse Brinkley and Anthony Bonsante each had issues to deal with leading up to this bout. Brinkley appeared to be suffering from a lack of confidence/motivation and also had to shed some weight to avoid being eliminated on the scales. Bonsante, a nice guy who could never shut up about doing this all for his kids, was still recovering from a hamstring injury. Bonsante got the better of Brinkley through most of the fight but got caught with a great uppercut in the fifth and final round. He beat the count but never fully recovered and the bout had to be stopped by the referee with Bonsante almost defenseless on the ropes. Brinkley joins Peter Manfredo Jr., Sergio Mora and Alfonso Gomez in what should be a very competitive final four. Each contestant knows it's only one more win to fight at Caesar's Palace; two more wins for the jackpot.
