Mora Takes Contender Title

Wednesday May 25, 2005
Sergio Mora outpointed Peter Manfredo Jr. over seven rounds to win the $1 million grand prize in "The Contender", NBC's reality boxing tournament. Mora was a slight underdog going into the fight but was much quicker and sharper than Manfredo throughout the bout. All three judges saw the fight for Mora by scores of 70-63, 69-64 and 68-65. Also, Ishe Smith won a unanimous decision over Anthony Bonsante; Jeff Fraza won by split decision over Brent Cooper; and Jimmy Lange won a majority decision over Tarick Salmaci. While NBC decided not to pick up "The Contender" for a second season, Stallone spent most of the night talking about rematches and series creator Mark Burnett said "if NBC doesn't want to do this, we'll go somewhere else".
