Hearns Plans (Another) Comeback at 46
Thursday June 30, 2005
In most sports, a retired athlete is done competing in his or her chosen sport. In boxing, a retired fighter is simply between fights. Latest example? Tommy Hearns, nearly a quarter century after winning his first title, is planning to return to the ring at age 46. Hearns is already an all-time great that is loved and respected by boxing fans around the world. So, why come back? His last fight (against Uriah Grant) was over five years ago and he had to quit that one with an injury in the second round. Again, why come back? Apparently, Hearns has not found anything to replace the thrill of being in the ring: "I feel this is what I want to do to make myself happy and better myself." The date, site and opponent are not yet set but expect Hearns to share the card with his son, Ronald, 26, a middleweight who is currently 6-0. Former trainer Emanuel Steward is not in favor of the comeback and won't be in Hearns' corner but nevertheless wishes his former star good luck. Hearns might win his comeback fight ... and possibly even a few more if he decides to stick with it. Let's just hope he doesn't get hurt before his next "retirement".
