Gatti-Mayweather a PPV Success

Friday July 1, 2005
Before they met last Saturday night, neither Arturo Gatti nor Floyd Mayweather had ever headlined a pay-per-view event. Nevertheless, the bout did an impressive 340,000 buys, generating $15.3 million in PPV revenue. With those numbers, Gatti and Mayweather join Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad as non-heavyweights who have the star power to carry a pay-per-view event. For comparison, each fight in the memorable Marco Antonio Barrera-Erik Morales trilogy produced 300,000-330,000 buys and $13-15 million. Other PPV facts:

* Biggest non-heavyweight PPV event: Trinidad-De La Hoya in 1999 produced 1.4 million buys and $71 million.

* Most PPV buys: 1.99 million for Evander Holyfield-Mike Tyson II in 1997 (producing $99 million).

* Highest PPV revenue: $103 million for Lennox Lewis-Tyson in 2002 (on 1.8 million buys).
