Hopkins Appeals Loss to Taylor
Thursday July 21, 2005
Bernard Hopkins is having difficulty dealing with his loss to Jermain Taylor. Instead of blaming himself - as he should - for basically giving away seven of the first eight rounds, he's choosing to blame the judges. Yes, it was a close decision that could have gone either way. Yes, Duane Ford should have scored the 12th round for Hopkins which would have resulted in a draw and Hopkins retaining his title. So Hopkins has filed an appeal with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, hoping that the decision will be reviewed and overturned. Sorry Bernard, not gonna happen. On the plus side, Hopkins will get another chance to defeat Taylor in the ring. The rematch will likely happen in December. October 1 was originally slated as a possible date for the rematch but the deep cut Taylor suffered near his hairline required 15 stitches and will prevent him from sparring until early September. Also on the plus side, HBO reported 350,000 pay-per-view buys and $17.5 million in PPV revenue for the Hopkins-Taylor bout. The fight will be replayed on HBO on Saturday, July 23 at 10:15 p.m. ET.
