Hearns Wins But Fails to Impress in Comeback
Sunday July 31, 2005
The good news is that Tommy Hearns emerged unscathed - and victorious - in his first fight in over five years. Unfortunately, that - in a way - is also the bad news. Hearns, 46, looked sluggish and took far too many punches before his had-picked opponent, John Long, elected not to come out for the ninth round. Despite the lackluster performance, the former champ came away feeling good about his comeback: "This was just the first fight, I got through it and I won. Now we go on." Even a faded Hearns was too much for a journeyman like John Long. That likely won't be the case if he steps up the quality of his opposition in upcoming bouts. On the undercard, Hearns' son Ronald knocked out Donald Adams in the first round.
