Rahman vs. Barrett: Why is This on Pay-Per-View?

Wednesday August 10, 2005
The good news is that Don King has put together an interesting fight card for this Saturday night. The bad news is that it's on pay-per-view and it doesn't belong there. Hasim Rahman vs. Monte Barrett may determine Vitali Klitschko's next opponent ... but it's not a PPV fight. Ricardo Mayorga vs. Michele Piccirillo could be fun ... but it's not a PPV fight. Luis Collazo vs. Miguel Angel Gonzalez is for an alphabet title ... but who's going to pay to see it? Ditto, Alejandro Garcia vs. Luca Messi. And heavyweights Oliver McCall and Przemyslaw Saleta would have a hard time making it onto ESPN2 or FOX Sports. Bottom line: While fight fans are likely curious to see who wins the Rahman-Barrett bout, they're most likely not curious enough to actually pay to watch it.
