Good News, Bad News for Holyfield
Wednesday August 17, 2005
Evander Holyfield has received a somewhat mixed message from the New York State Athletic Association. On the one hand, the former champ passed a battery of physical tests so the Commission had no choice but to lift his medical suspension. On the other hand, the Commission essentially issued a lifetime ban on Holyfield fighting in New York due to "diminished skills and poor performance". Lifting the medical ban opens the door for Holyfield to be licensed in other states. While most fight fans want Holyfield, 42, to retire after demonstrating an inability to "pull the trigger" in recent bouts, the former champ vows to continue fighting until he is once again the "undisputed heavyweight champion of the world". Holyfield, despite a 2-5-2 record since 1999, should be allowed to decide whether or not to continue his career. It's just unfortunate that he's unlikely to make the decision that everyone that cares about him would like to see him make.
