Morales Stunned by Raheem
Monday September 12, 2005
Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales were supposed to be fighting tune-ups in preparation for a big money rematch early next year. Apparently, their opponents were unaware of the script. Pacquiao did his part, scoring a sixth round TKO over Hector Velazquez but it was far from easy. Morales, however, failed to take care of business, dropping a one-sided decision to a very impressive Zahir Raheem. Morales may have been looking past Raheem and he did seem a bit sluggish in his first bout at 135. But the bottom line is Morales had no answers for Raheem's speed and slick boxing style. Scores were 118-110, 116-112, 115-113. Promoter Bob Arum says Morales-Pacquaio II is still on for January 21 but it will be a lot tougher sell - particularly at pay-per-view prices - coming off such a poor performance from Morales.
