Leavander Johnson in Critical Condition

Sunday September 18, 2005
Shortly after losing his IBF lightweight title to Jesus Chavez, Leavander Johnson was in a Las Vegas hospital fighting for his life. Johnson was never knocked down during the fight but absorbed more than 400 punches before referee Tony Weeks finally stopped the bout during the 11th round. Johnson left the ring under his own power but began having trouble walking on his way back to the dressing room. He was rushed to nearby University Medical Center where a CAT scan showed Johnson had suffered a subdural hematoma. He underwent emergency surgery and remains in a drug-induced coma. The fact that Johnson survived the surgery is mildly encouraging but he is still listed in critical condition.

On the same fight card, Shane Mosley was very unimpressive in earning a unanimous decision against Jose Luiz Cruz. In contrast, Marco Antonio Barrera was extremely impressive in his unanimous decision victory over IBF super featherweight champ Robbie Peden.
