Wright Outpoints Relentless Soliman
Sunday December 11, 2005
Nobody expected Sam Soliman to be a tougher opponent for Winky Wright than the great Felix Trinidad ... but one look at Wright's face after 12 rounds and it was very evident that he had been in a fight. Soliman's style could be viewed as either unorthodox or amateurish but his workrate was almost unprecedented. Soliman threw an amazing 1260 punches - over 100 per round - but landed at only a 14% rate. Wright landed an impressive 46% of the 652 punches he threw. In the end, it was Wright's accuracy and punching power that won him the fight by scores of 115-112, 117-110 and 115-113. Wright did what he had to do against a difficult opponent but did nothing to help sell a possible middleweight superfight with undefeated champ Jermain Taylor.
