Gatti Stops Damgaard in 11
Sunday January 29, 2006
Time after time, Arturo Gatti demonstrates that boxing glory is not about alphabet titles and meaningless belts. It's about heart and entertainment value -- two areas in which Gatti is a true world champion. Coming off a brutal beating at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Gatti bounced back with a vintage performance against previously undefeated Thomas Damgaard of Denmark. Damgaard was tough and landed nearly as often as Gatti, but Gatti used his edges in speed and punching power to gradually take control of the fight. The fight ended in the 11th when referee Lindsey Page jumped in to stop the action with Damgaard out on his feet. Gatti earned $1.4 million for the fight while Damgaard received $500,000. Next up for Gatti will likely be a shot at Carlos Baldomir, who recently defeated Zab Judah for the welterweight title. Gatti's name may never appear in the pound-for-pound top ten, but he's going to be remembered long after he's done as a fighter who gave fans their money's worth every time out.
