Liakhovich Takes Title from Brewster

Sunday April 2, 2006
Lamon Brewster has the heart and the chin of a champion. Unfortunately, his skills and - at least on this night - his conditioning were of less-than-championship caliber. Brewster lost his WBO heavyweight title to Sergei Liakhovich in an action-packed battle over 12 rounds. Liakhovich demonstrated better boxing skills throughout but was forced to take in knee in the seventh to weather one of Brewster's barrages. In the end, all tree judges scored the fight for Liakhovich: 115-113, 115-112 and 117-110 victory. This fight did absolutely nothing to clear up the muddled picture in the heavyweight division ... but at least it was entertaining! A rematch is likely.
