Brewer Advances on The Contender

Thursday August 10, 2006
The latest episode of season two of The Contender featured the manufactured "grudge match" between Vinroy Barrett and Grady Brewer. After several weeks of Barrett suggesting - with no apparent evidence - that Brewer was ducking him, it was good to finally get this fight out of the way so the series can move on to new and, hopefully, more interesting storylines.

As for the fight itself, who knows? Once again, it was edited to appear extremely close and competitive so there would be drama when the scores were announced. Yet, the scores themselves (49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 all for Brewer) suggested a fairly one-sided bout. Sure, the countless cuts to the wife/girlfriend yelling "Come on, baby!" and the trainer calling out "Let's go!" are tremendously insightful and entertaining (not!) but enough already.

This week's episode also laid the foundation for a round two "grudge" match between Cornelius Bundrage and Walter Wright.
