Pacquiao Overwhelms Morales

Sunday November 19, 2006
When a great fighter in his prime faces a great fighter at the end of his career, it's usually the fighter in his prime that emerges victorious ... and that's exactly what happened in Las Vegas when featherweights Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales met in the rubber match of their trilogy. Pacquiao won the first round, knocked Morales down with a left hand in the second and dropped him two more times in the third round. After the third knockdown, Morales - who still displayed his trademark willingness to trade punches and fight back when hurt - appeared to concede and made no effort to beat the count.

Morales, who appeared drained by making weight, was no match for the blinding speed and power of Pacquiao and suggested after the fight that "maybe it's time to think about not doing this anymore". If this was indeed his final fight, he has given fans many thrills during an action-packed 53-bout career.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, reaffirms his superstar status in the sport and merits attention from the broader sports-viewing public. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport today but his dominance - and tendency to fight conservatively and cautiously - can produce one-sided bouts with little drama. Pacquiao's style, on the other hand, almost guarantees thrilling results. Next up for Pacquiao is - hopefully - a rematch with either Marco Antonio Barrera or Juan Manuel Marquez.

If you missed Pacquiao's performance against Morales, make sure to catch it when HBO replays it next weekend and stay tuned as the best is likely still to come from the most exciting fighter in boxing.

I love watching Eric Morales because even he was hurt he still keeps on fighting. But Against Paquiao during the 3rd fight, it seems he fought only for money. I still believe he can exite the lightweight division in the very near future.

there’s no disgrace in his lost to a younger, stronger, faster fighter….morrales has always faced the best the divison has to offer in some cases a particular fighter just might have your style to beat…..but as for the other young’ns comin up dont think you can do what paq just did or you might end up sleep in the ring……….

Yah morales should not disgrace him self for that fight. If your a real champion u should know how to accept defeat. Besides he already give us some great fight before, speacially in his 20’s. We should respect Morales for facing any best fighter in his division with no fear. Win or lose he will give u a good fight to any fighter. His days are over, and today is Pacmans Era. I’m looking forward for Pacquiao and Barrera fight. Thats gonna be good, Barrera is going to avenge his defeat from pacquiao.

Congrats Pacman and thank morales for the good fights.

who says pacquiao is going only for money? thats “EL TERRIBLE” wrong.. the pacman already got lots of it, its all about honor and carrying hope, unity, and excitement to his countrymen..

Kudos to the fighters who are willng to face the best without giving importance to alphabet titles. Pacquiao and Morales have shown us that being the “world” champion does not necessarily means you are the best.

I hope Pacquiao will continue to excite us in the 130 lbs. division. For Morales, I hope he ends his career with a win probably at 135 lbs and in front of his countrymen.

To the 2 future hall-of-famers, thanks for the trilogy. It was well worth it.

It seems to me that morales only pursued for decrease in weight and did not prepare for the bout. However, that is not suppose to be an excuse for not getting up at the 3rd knockdown. For me, he took the easier route, which is to give up and earn the money hurriedly. It seems to me that way because I think Morales indeed stood a chance. I’m a Filipino too but if we look at it critically, Morales is not suppose to give up because we all know he has also the heart of a champ. Kudos!!! ^_^

your correct that morales is beaten because of pacquiao speed and strenght, but i think morales is still in great shape and i think he can still fight joan guzman and knocked him out,in his battle with the pacman over confidence that weakens him, he’s only 30 years old he can set a match between Valero and Guzman, cause now the next best fighter is not Valero nor Guzman and definitely not Barrera, it is still the “el terrible”

(9) Ignacio Moran says:

Anyone who wants to believe Barrera will avenge his TKO defeat to Pacquiao has no idea what the Mexican is up for. Pacquiao, the people’s champion who also has a large Mexican following will go after Barrera from the get go and will not let up. He is stronger, faster and more willing to exchange punches which is bad news for Barrera. I see a overhand right and a left hook putting Barrera out for the count between rounds 7 to 10. This Filipino legend-in-the-making will end the careers of Barrera and Morales for good. He will emerge out of this fight as the best pound-for-pound-fighter over Roger Mayweather, who hasn’t had the competition in his division that Pacquiao has had in his young career. Manny Pacquiao is the most exciting fighter in boxing since early Mike Tyson. I will put him in the ranks of Duran, Carlos Ortiz, Trinidad, de la Hoya, Ayala, Pep, Flash Elorde, Alexis Arguello, the great Pacho Villa, Salvador Sanchez, etc. if and when he puts the lights out on Barrera.

I think it was the best time for morales to retire, and it was inevitable. He don’t need to prove anything because it was his honor to be beaten (KO R3)by a great and maybe the best fighter in their division. He can win for his next fights but he would never again regain the glory once he achieved and another lost to a lesser fighter might only put his name in jeopardy. Godbless us all..

pac man fever. Morales once again looked like a skeleton, can’t believe he said ‘no mas’, such a sad fall. ‘El Terrible’ more like just plain terrible.

that morales and pacman trilogy legend is a consistent manifestation that pacman should be in the top 1 for the pound-for-pound list… Morales will be great because of the lessons that pacman has just gave him.

I think morales should retire now hes been a great champion and a honour to watch over the years i would have loved to see the trilogy with pac man and morales if the later was in his prime. I know morales is only 30 but i think 1 to many wars has finally caught up with him i still even not in his prime he move up a division to light weight an be a contender but in morales career hes never been a contender hes always been a champion and a man who will go down as a true legend who i would like to take my hat off to the man becuase i dont know how anyone can say a bad word about the man.whether it be his trilogy with barrera (one of the greatest ever)or the fact that all of his fights were so exciteing i just think in the end it was one war to many for the el’terrible. As for pac man absolutely outstanding a true legend and he seems to just get better in every fight ive seen such an exciteing fighter i think he would be to quick and strong for barrera (but you never know with barrera)but i think marquez could possibly out box pacman the way i thought he did in their first fight please get one of those fights on in the best division in the sport.

i think morales did his best in that fight and his mind and spirits gave it all but still pacman is stronger and faster. morales cant take pacquiao punches but manny can take his punches so thats the big reason he for his lost. every champion has its doomed even for pacquiao. its just sad that he boast himself so much before the their fight rather than being humble and be more prepared bcuz everyone knows that pacquiao is powerful and fast.

pacman is reli grit hes 2 fast 2 strong for el terrible.i want him 2 hav a rematch with marquez…i love the marquez counter attck pacman, but pacman is a never say die boxer….

(18) billyblue says:

manny ought to fight with marquez, not with barera. if it happens, this probably would be the fight of the year. i know manny is fast and strong, but the fighting spirit of marquez is also strong. this is gonna be an exciting fight! watch it!

(19) alstephen says:

morales and pacquiao are good fighters in their division. but pacquiao outpowered morales because of his strength and agility. who would dare to face the pacman? if barrera does, he’s ending up his boxing carrier early. and if marquez does, he’s merely passing the fame to someone who’s better than him. but of course, let’s not forget jorge solis whose undefeated record will be marred with a stain–his first tko. manny is indeed a champ. no one can stop him, not even any of the lined up mexicans. manny, the people’s champ is but a once-in-a-billion boxer. yes, he already had 2 defeats before, but those defeats just gave him lessons, lessons to improve and become stronger and faster than any of his counterparts. and if any of those who knocked him down fights with him again, he is commiting a suicide and won’t be able to get up even in the first round. pacman is the best!
