Axel Schulz Loses Comeback Bid ... Retires

Sunday November 26, 2006
Heavyweight Axel Schulz was out of the ring for 2,618 days but it took him less than 17 minutes to realize that coming back was a bad idea. Schulz, 38, disappointed himself and his huge fan base in Germany by getting decisively pounded by Brian Minto in his first and - if he's true to his word - last comeback bout.

Minto (27-1) exposed Schulz (26-5-1) as a shell of his former self and stopped the former title challenger via a sixth-round technical knockout. Immediately after the bout, Schulz left the door open for possibly continuing his comeback but has since thought better of it and opted to hang up the gloves for good: "This was definitely the end for me ... I overestimated myself."

Schulz's most notable bouts were all losses in title fights: a controversial decision loss against George Foreman in 1995; a split decision loss to Michael Moorer in 1996; and an eighth round TKO loss to Wladimir Klitschko in 1999.

Minto made his own fight against the Duva’s wishes. he was getting nowhere fast. This was his biggest victory even though no one saw it back in the US. It wasn’t like being put in with a crafty Tony Tubbs.
