The Greatest Turns 65

Wednesday January 17, 2007
Muhammad Ali may no longer float like a butterfly or sting like a bee, but - starting today - the former heavyweight champ CAN begin collecting Social Security. At 65, Ali's body has been slowed by Parkinson's Disease (and the effects of recent surgery to correct spinal stenosis), but all reports are that his mind remains sharp and clear. Fans wishing to send Ali a birthday message can do so at the Muhammad Ali Center web site.

Ali's 65th birthday is also being used as the launch date for a line of snack foods being marketed by G.O.A.T., which stands for - surprise! - "Greatest Of All Time." G.O.A.T. was formed last year when Ali sold an 80% stake in his name and likeness to CKX Inc. for $50 million.

Well, if you want to get technical, you can actually retire as early as age 62 and begin receiving Social Security benefits. However, if you retire before “Full Retirement Age” (which ranges from 65 to 67 depending on your year of birth), your benefits are reduced accordingly.
