Malignaggi Impresses; Ex-"Contenders" Lose

Sunday February 18, 2007
Junior welterweight Paulie Malignaggi (21-1) scored a ten round unanimous decision over Edner Cherry (21-4-2) in his first fight since last June, when he absorbed tremendous punishment from Miguel Cotto. Malignaggi was too quick and slick for Cherry and the bout was scored a near shutout: 100-90, 98-92, 98-92. Malignaggi hopes to get a title shot later this year against either Ricardo Torres or Lovemore N'dou before eventually facing Ricky Hatton in a big money bout.

Junior middleweight Sechew Powell (21-1) also bounced back from his first loss (to Kassim Ouma) with a unanimous - but relatively unimpressive - ten round decision over Ishe Smith (18-2), from season one of the "Contender" TV series. Neither fighter looked great but Powell was busier and won 97-92 on all three judges' scorecards.

The most impressive fighter of the night was undefeated welterweight Andre Berto (17-0) who dropped an alum of season two of the "Contender", Norberto Bravo (23-13-3), three times in the first round to win via TKO. Bravo, who was a relatively late replacement for Ben Tackie (visa problems), was completely unable to deal with Berto's speed and power. Left hooks produced the first two knockdown. The third came from a right. At 23, Berto has the tools to be superstar and already appears ready to face a top ten opponent.

All three bouts were televised live on HBO's Boxing After Dark from the Hammersmith Ballroom in New York.

Elsewhere: 2000 Olympic gold medalist Audley Harrison (21-3) was knocked out cold in the third round by a right from Michael Sprott (30-10). Coming out of the Olympics, Harrison, at 6-5, 250, seemed poised to become a dominant force in the heavyweight division ... but it never happened. With three losses in his last five bouts - none against world class competition - it's safe to officially label Harrison, now 35, a bust.

Uh, it wasn’t Cotto that backed out of the fight, it was actually Margarito. He decided to fight his mandatory challenger Paul Williams instead. So blame him.
