Tapia Critical After Cocaine Overdose
Tuesday March 13, 2007
Former world champ Johnny Tapia, 40, is in critical condition in an Albuquerque hospital after an apparent cocaine overdose. Tapia's wife, Teresa, called from a hotel at 4:30 a.m. to report that her husband wasn't breathing. Paramedics found Tapia unconscious and rushed him to the hospital where he was still unconscious several hours later. Tapia, who makes as many headlines outside the ring as he does fighting, is expected to be charged with possession of a controlled substance after a plastic bag containing cocaine was found at the scene.
Tapia's most recent overdose comes just two weeks after he won a majority decision over Evaristo Primero in his latest - but possibly not final - 'farewell' fight.
