Williams Outpoints Margarito; Gomez Stops Gatti
Paul Williams W 12 Antonio Margarito: Non-stop punching machine Williams too long, too fast and too busy for Margarito. Miguel Cotto could be next . . .
Alfonso Gomez TKO 7 Arturo Gatti: Impressive Gomez lands at will to score best win ever for an alumnus of The Contender. Gomez may fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. next. Gatti retires after the fight ... let's hope this time he means it.
Kermit Cintron KO 2 Walter Matthysse: Cintron's precision power punching results in devastating KO. Cintron called out Shane Mosley after the fight.
Roy Jones Jr. W 12 Anthony Hanshaw: Jones outboxes previously undefeated foe. Is Felix Trinidad really next?
John Duddy TKO 10 Alessio Furlan: Duddy delivers final round TKO in first career fight in Ireland. Time for Duddy to test himself against better opposition.

I was one of the few people that expected Gomez to win, but I was impressed by the way he won. Gomez packs more of a punch than people give him credit for. At least 4 out of his first 21 fights were at short round middleweight fights in a weight class he does lack power and he has had more short round fights at the begining of his career. So his power can be deceiving at welterweight at which he may not be a one punch knockout specialist but he does carry a good punch. Alfonso may not be extremely gifted athleticly but he is a very skilled boxer with a good chin with loads of amateur experience and a strong strength of scheduled fights for a upcoming pro. Gatti is Gatti, he was just as much of a shot fighter as when he fought Mayweather and Baldomir in which both fighters got loads of credit for their win. Gomez should be given credit as well for a dominating win that is better than what Baldomir/ Mayweather could do before. Chavez/ Gomez would be a great fight. Also, great win for Cintron and the Margarito/ Williams fight was closer than HBO led everyone to believe; I saw it as a draw or close decision for Williams. Williams has a lot of pitty patt punches.
Paul Williams upset the applecart. Will Cotto fight him as he was to fight Margarito whom called out Mayweather for years and didn’t get a fight like Hatton is going to for doing the same.
the maragito fight was hardly close………yes maragito took a lot of shots and kept coming but the main point is this…he got shot……..williams also handle the punchers punch a lot better than people or the average joe would think i didnt see paul hurt at all but rather wethered the assault then continued beating maragito up down sideways……….and i like cintron but he should be careful of his boasts…yes mosely aint the suga of the 90’s but he still an A fighter he ranges between + & – and cintron took a loss to maragito who cant box…..he can punch but he cant box mosely can do both……so i’d advise cintron to rematch maragito and that would solidify his challenge to mosely or beat a williams or a hatton.because i can see mosely stopping him by 9-10….kudos to gomez he can say HE offically retired Gatti but maybe he’ll get a shot against hatton……..watch
2 judges scored the margarito/ williams fight close (115-113) as well as fightnews.com had it a draw and other critics had it close. People tend to always side with HBO’s point of view and lederman is not always the best scorer. Most of Williams punchs were slaps. Williams may have not been wobbled or badly hurt but Margarito did hurt Williams and Paul admitted so in post fight interview as well as his cut eye being evidence. Pro boxing is scored by effective hard punching not by who throws the most. Williams was definitely busier but many of his punchs(not all) didnt have anything on them I do not argue with a close win for Williams it is fair but Margarito was in the fight and definitely won a few rounds. Gatti- Hatton will never happen; I don’t think that will even be considered by either fighters it doesn’t make any sense.
Just in case previous comment was refering to Gomez-Hatton it won’t happen soon either. Probably be Gomez- Chavez or Gomez-Malinaggi and Hatton-Mayweather.
Paul Williams won a decision suited for an amateur/olympic bout. Fighting in a professional bout power punches carry a greater value and usually scored higher. Williams is a talented boxer but the pitter patter of his punches did not win him an earned decision but one blinded by the flurry of his slaps.
A rematch would be great as both fighters deserve more resolution to the ??????? victory/loss!
i notice people say he pitty pat or slaps…well then maragito really has no excuse for not just walking in and stopping him…….connect% is what wins in distance fights yeah someone might hit more solidily or with more power but if you land 2 power shots and i land 20 “pitty pat slaps” i still out point you……..now imagine if that was floyd, maragito would of not only been out punched but more than probally embarassed by mayweathers lateral movement…plus he’s a better boxer than williams..i know maragito has a lot of fans because he just comes at ya and fights…but this is boxing mastering fighting with hit and not be hit tactics…..so as long as he fights B or B- fighters he’ll shine give him an A A+ fighter he’ll always come up short…..
Gatti was a finished fighter before he got in the ring; the guy had a glorious run and fought fights with Ward that people will watch for decades. A great heart and courage to spare just could not take away the wear of years. Gomez at best is a fair fighter with little or no future against any competition worth anything, but he sent Gatti into retirement. That shows how over the hill Gatti was, not how good Gomez is. Williams and Margarito was less entertaining than I would have liked. If either had a punch, the fight would have gone to the puncher. Margarito was more aggressive and Williams spends lots of time slapping and not punching. But Margarito is not much of a puncher either. The fight could have been a draw, but I am not upset that Williams won. With a real banger, he will run faster or fall.
Now Cintron was just awesome. Smart, fast and lots of power. That fight more than made up for the other dull matches, but in the end, I still need to say that Gatti deserves a Hall of Fame spot for courage and entertainment all these years.
