Forrest Shines Against Baldomir

Sunday July 29, 2007
Former welterweight champs Vernon Forrest (39-2) and Carlos Baldomir (43-11-6) moved up to super welterweight to fight for the vacant WBC belt and put on quite an entertaining show. Forrest, 36, looked rejuvenated in his best performance since back-to-back wins over Shane Mosley in 2002. Baldomir, also 36, showed his trademark toughness and great chin but had no answers for Forrest's movement and hand speed.

Forrest landed 286 of 663 punches (43%) to 157 of 669 (23%) for Baldomir. All three judges scored the fight for Forrest: 118-109, 118-109, 116-111. Forrest was docked one point for a low blow in round nine.

Forrest's impressive win puts him right back in the mix for a big money fight at 154 or 160, though he said he wants to take some time off to relax before thinking about who he wants to fight next. Baldomir indicated he's going to seriously consider retirement.

Forrest was considered as one of the best in boxing when he defeated Shane Mosley twice. However, his loss to Mayorga really derailed him from the top. I hope he can regain his form starting with his win over Baldomir.

Never was impressed by Forrest. He just
had Mosley’s number. He was never more
impressive than against Shane. Ricardo
got his clock cleaned by Oscar and it
means Forrest could never be in that
category of the best in that class.
He’ll never look that good again,
unless he fights Shane again…
