Oscar Buys Ring Magazine
Wednesday September 19, 2007
The Ring magazine has a new owner and it's ... Oscar De La Hoya! Sports and Entertainment Publications, a division of Golden Boy Enterprises, purchased the "The Bible of Boxing" - as well as KO Boxing, World Boxing and Pro Wrestling Illustrated - from Kappa Publishing Group for an undisclosed sum (rumored to be around $7 million). The Ring was founded in 1922.
Richard Schaefer, Golden Boy's CEO, says "We will not get involved in editorial content." They do, however, intend to expand staff, improve production quality and - possibly - launch a Spanish-language version.

I love The Ring, it’s a little-known gem of sports journalism, the writing is smart and fun. An article about how tired one boxer looked in a fight said he rose from his corner for each round “like a man getting out of bed for the 5:30 shift on the garbage truck,” or something like that. I hope de la Hoya gives it more resources, but lets those writers keep doing their job.
Maybe Oscar plans to be the first Ring centerfold in his new outfit!
