Pacquiao-Barrera II: Round-by-Round

From , Former About.com GuideOctober 6, 2007

Follow me on:

Round-by-round coverage and - completely unofficial - scoring of the rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barrera.

Round One: Both fighters cautious over first two minutes which favors Barrera. Pacquiao picks up pace in final minute and lands a few good shots. Pacquiao 10-9

Round Two: Pacquiao initiates most of the action with Barrera countering with some success. Pacquiao 10-9

Round Three: Barrera a bit too defensive-minded. Pacquiao appears stronger and is definitely quicker. Barrera's corner tells him he's up 3-0. Hard to imagine that's the case. Pacquiao 10-9

Round Four: Barrera briefly trades but seems intent on fighting a technical fight. Not sure if Barrera expects Pacquiao to tire in the late rounds or if he's just pacing himself. Either way, not a great plan. Pacquiao 10-9

Round Five: Best round of the fight so far as Barrera finally trades but Pacquiao's activity level still gives him the edge. Barrera's corner scold him for exchanging punches ... telling him to relax, wait. Barrera will need a KO if he waits much longer. Pacquiao 10-9

Round Six: Rounds starts slowly but a hard counter right from Barrera seems to energize Pacquiao. Barrera is technically solid and competitive but Pacquiao is simply outworking him. Punch stats continue to favor Pacquaio. Pacquiao 10-9

Round Seven: Relatively uneventful round. Less action favors Barrera. Barrera 10-9

Round Eight: Tough round to score. Barrera's corner tells him Pacquiao is tired. Wishful thinking. Barrera 10-9

Round Nine: Barrera has some success trading shots but is either unwilling or unable to do it with any consistency. Barrera's corner finally tells him to pick it up. Let's see how he responds. Pacquiao 10-9

Round Ten: Barrera's days as a crowd-pleaser are long gone. He's hasn't conceded but doesn't appear willing to go on the offensive and risk absorbing some punishment. Pacquiao 10-9

Round Eleven: Good action round but Pacquaio is fresher and land the heavier blows. Barrera, bleeding from a cut below his right eye, hits Pacquaio on a break and is deducted one point. Pacquaio appears dazed during the pause in the action but is fine once the fight resumes. Pacquiao 10-8

Round Twelve: Barrera does nothing dramatic in the final round -- seemingly satisfied with going the distance or perhaps counting on a gift from the judges. Pacquiao 10-9

Judges Scoring: 118-109, 118-109 and 115-112 all for Pacquiao.

Punch Stats: Total Punches: Pacquiao - 249 of 667 (37%). Barrera - 111 of 527 (21%). Total Jabs: Pacquiao - 80 of 361 (22%). Barrera - 36 of 312 (12%). Total Power Punches: Pacquiao - 169 of 306 (55%). Barrera - 75 of 215 (35%).

Next: Barrera says this was his final fight ... we'll see. The logical next fight for Pacquiao is a rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez.

This fight analysis is absolutely stupid and biased. I had at least 8 rounds that could have gone either way. Also, they fail to mention Pacquiao was clearly stunned by Barrera (round five) and that Barrera never seemed hurt. Barrera set the pace of the fight and kept things tactical, and was successful at making Pacquiao look silly. Pacquiao was awarded a decision just beacuse he delivered more punches (although the punch stats are also WAAAAAAY incorrect), and because he is the most marketable of the two (Barrera announced his this would be his last fight WEEKS BEFORE the match). Whoever reads this analysis would think Pacquiao whooped Barrera’s ass during the whole fight, and that is far from true. At least 3 broadcasts had the fight in favor of Barrera on their online round by round follow-up.

Another great fight from the Filipino warrior. Any questions about Pac’s power has been answered already anyway.
