Mayorga Retires Vargas!

Follow me on:

Fernando Vargas demonstrated that he still has a lot of heart ... but not much else. How bad was Vargas? He actually made Ricardo Mayorga look decent. Mayorga knocked Vargas down in the first and eleventh rounds on his way to a majority decision: 115-111, 114-112 and 113-113. Vargas had his moments against the easy-to-hit Mayorga but the two knockdowns - both caused more by Vargas' poor balance than by anything landed by Mayorga - were too much to overcome.

Vargas said this was his last fight and his many fans should hope he sticks to his word. Few fighters have ever looked as old as Vargas at age 29. Knockout losses to Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosley (twice) - not to mention tremendous fluctuations in weight - have robbed Vargas of his legs and his reflexes. He may have never fully lived up to his potential but he always gave the fans their money's worth.

As for Mayorga, he says he intends to drop back down from the career high 164 pounds he weighed for this fight to compete again at 147. He called out Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather Jr. because that's where the money is ... not because he has any realistic shot at being the least bit competitive against either fighter. Not only is Mayorga unlikely to ever see 147 again, but his blow out losses to Trinidad and De La Hoya mean he'll likely have to earn his way back into title contention rather than just be handed a shot based on name recognition. A win over a faded Vargas looks good on the resume (as well as the bank statement) but is otherwise relatively insignificant.

Hey Andrew….Did you watch this fight? Yes Vargas had poor balance and should be done with his career. But Mayorga will have two or three good purses before he is gone. His style is reckless and violent. And that attracts viewers. And you speak of him as if he is not a 2 time world champion. Easy to hit? Yes, but so was Diego Corrales and he managed to have some great world title fights, not just with Castillo, but Casamayor and Freitas as well. I dont give him a chance in the 147 lb. division to conquer all, but a Margarito fight, or a Paul Williams fight, Kermit Cintron or Zab Judah would definantly be worth watching. Mayorga looked as good against Vargas as he did against Vernon Forrest. And that is at a world Championship level.

Andrew, you’re a misinformed writer. Vargas said he was going to retire way before the fight took place. To say that Mayorga retired Vargas is stupid, especially when you add an exclamation mark at the end.

Whoever or whatever retired Vargas, the important thing is that this fine young man is retired. I do believe he was damaged severely in previous fights and he really should not have taken the Mayorga fight whether he needed the money or not. He is far older than his 29 years indicates and one can only hope he will do well being away from the ring. Mayorga is not as good as he looked against a weak Vargas, but he is not as bad as many say he is either. He is manic enough and violent in spurts to present a threat to higher ranked fighters at least for a while and especially at a much faster 147 pounds. It remains to be seen if he can get big fights any more, but if he can show he still has ability by taking one or two more significant fights, he just might pull it off.
