Poll: Mayweather vs. Hatton. Who Will Win?

Wednesday December 5, 2007
Two undefeated champions fighting each other in their primes doesn't happen often. We had one such fight - Joe Calzaghe facing Mikkel Kessler - last month. We get another treat this Saturday night, when Floyd Mayweather Jr. (38-0) takes on Ricky Hatton (43-0) in Las Vegas (and on pay-per-view).

Prediction: The crowd - as well as the general boxing public - will be behind Hatton. Hatton is a very likeable, everyman champ. Mayweather, on the other hand, has proven completely willing and able to play the bad guy... even though he's not a bad guy at all. Once they're in the ring, none of the role playing will matter. Hatton is very good. Mayweather is great. It's as simple as that. Hatton will try and do what Jose Luis Castillo did in two close decision losses to Floyd back in 2002 -- apply constant pressure. That's the right game plan and should insure an entertaining fight in which Mayweather has to trade punches and absorb more punishment that he would like. Nevertheless, Mayweather is too quick and too skilled defensively to lose many rounds to Hatton and, while Hatton is a punishing body puncher, it's almost impossible to picture Mayweather not being there at the end. Mayweather by unanimous decision.

Who do you think will win? Mayweather or Hatton? Vote in our poll.

Mayweather has always been more concerned with not getting hurt than mixing it up with anyone who can hit hard. He will be on his toes all nightand Hatton will come forward. Hatton is better than anyon at grabbing and hitting and holding and he has very fast hands. he hits hard and has more dimensions than Mayweather as a fighter and is more adaptable. I figure he will get Mayweather cornered mor than others have or make Mayweather look like a runner. If he can get him enough he will stop Mayweather, but I see this going the distance and being very close, maybe a draw.

Guy what the hell are YOU talking about? floyd is a boxer not a brawler and the sweet science is called the art of hitting without being hit…and floyd doesnt run he slips he bobs and weaves and he moves sidesteps why stand there and give a lesser fighter..ie, hatton a punchers chance!?!…that would’nt be smart…sounds as if you are resolved in knowing hatton will lose and you are already making excuses for him….hate him or love him PBF is committed to training and his skillz are off the meter all the other former Olympians have losses not Young Money Mayweather why because he trains like a beast and fights like a Master…. Sugar Ray Robinson would be proud of this kid…and he’s the only one i’d say would beat him convincingly…..

Mayweather has become the played out stereotypical “money man” which people are growing tired of. Hatton is a down to earth brawler with a record to match Mayweather. I call it a decision given to Mayweather with a rematch in the near future.

have to agree with ‘vibe’ – mayweather is a great boxer (as much as i dont like the guy)and he’s smart. he’ll stay out of range, he’ll pepper hatton with those fast hands and he’ll get the decision. Hatton can win if he can get in close and he gets another ref that lets him do what he wants – but not in this town!
of course it wouldnt surprise me to see hatton win – nothing surprises me in boxing anymore but beating down a couple of older champs who were near the end of their careers compared to facing a man at his peak??

Been waiting for this one for a while. I tend to agree with DW about Floyd not liking to get hit, similar to Roy Jones Jr during his prime. Why get hit if you can make people miss? I saw him get smacked around and stung pretty good by Oscar even though ODLH’s skills have eroded. I have a great amount of respect for Floyd and have always liked him stylistically but he is one fighter (not unlike Oscar) whom I’ve always wanted to see get beat by KO at least once. Getting a good ass-whipping always seems to humble the best and mouthiest fighters. Gotta like Ricky with his non-stop workhorse attitude and stamina, even though Collazo made it tough for him after the jump to his weight class. If Hatton can bully Floyd and find a way to cut off the ring he can catch him with some power shots. On the flipside, Ricky needs to be at his best defensively as Floyd can throw some heavy punches and masterful combinations as well. It’s tough to predict this one, I’m leaning toward a close decision that can go either way. But then I’m torn by the fact that I’d really like to see the Pretty Boy with the big mouth finally get to see the rafters from the canvas. . . .just like Roy Jones did after his long reign. Thoroughbreds can only last so long and we shall see if Floyd will finally be put out to pasture with the mare’s. Good luck and best regards to both guys.

I would love to see the hitman do it. But I think if Mayweather lasts more than 5 or 6 rounds he will suss Ricky’s style and dance with him till the end to score a close points win.

Yeah Floyd really showed his skills against Oscar.. i wasn’t very impressed.. Oscar’s days were coming to an end but in saying that i still believe that oscar beat floyd and i also believe that hatton is at his prime and unlike Oscar will be able to ustilize the ring better against floyd.. Floyd id my favorite fighter and i have always loved the way he performs but every dog has its day.. I give it to Hatton by knock out cos floyd is someone to under estimate his opponents and that will be his downfall (lucky punch??? or pure skill… Hatton will win)

(10) noirnoticvibe says:

here’s the thing people Oscar Dela Hoya is a tall fighter known for his murderous left hook and lengthy arms floyd fought to nullify Oscars advantage and he did and if you watch the fight floyd rocked DLH TWICE! Ricky is not anywhere near DLH level of fighting even tho’ he’s pretty good but he doesnt fight like DLH he fights like a Brawler with average boxing skill now i must say he impressed me with his win over kostya..but kostya was looking for a reason to retire not stealing hattons glory but all kostya started talking about was retiring and in this sport once you go down that road well the body follows the minds will…..enter young money mayweather…he’s young people…flashy yes…at times arrogant yes…but his work ethic is unmatchable for a guy his age….he’s disciplined…and borrowing from a page of another mouthy fighter in a young ALI who most people payed to see lose during his heyday he got into your mind taking you outta your comfort zone well he’s done that already with hatton…Hatton on bbc news cursing during interviews just peep youtube.tv to see for yourself…Hatton will fight at the top of his game no doubt but so did the other 38 opponents he fought a Undefeated Deigo Corrales at the time 33-0-27 ko’s.and floyd took him apart.or Floyd with only 16 pro fights fighting WBC Champion and highly experinced Genaro Hernandez stopping him..or Castillio in his prime twice or Angel Manfredy,Emmanuel Burton who most fighters and champions ducked, Goyo Vargas, and then he moved up in weight so actually he’s fought bigger fighters because floyds natural walk around weight is usally 140-145lbs,,and really hattons credible win over kostya..a distance win over old 42 vince phillips,a worn out castillo who was ko’d by deigo and beaten up by floyd already(in his prime)..and why didntb he face Callazo again after he was gifted the win because Callazo has his number dont think floyd aint dialing that same number ahead of time……

(11) Johhny B says:

Vibe, I agree that Floyd rocked ODLH but only once when DLH was against the ropes, with a hook if I remember. Ricky may be too much for Floyd early on but if Floyd weathers the storm Ricky will eventually run out of steam like Collazo and Urango. If Ricky starts to hang on he’s bang in trouble. Ricky’s gotta do it early. Come on the Hitman!!!

The ONLY way Hatton Wins is if the Fix is in. Mayweather will “Pernell Whitaker” Hatton with superior Boxing skillz and make Hatton look like a total Amatuer unless the ref lets Hatton wrestle, Hold and Foul without taking points, “Hence the Fix”. Mayweather will never throw a fight and risk history so the judges will have to cheat Mayweather period! Personally I totally expect Mayweather to get robbed unless he “Auturo Gatti’s Hatton” which is what I suggest he do because if its close they will Rob Mayweather Period! Dirty M@!#$%^&&** Think of it this way, Pretty Boy gets Robbed, then we get a trilogy going, good for boxing yes, total BS …. Yes! What else is new, lets call it like it is! If Hatton looses, he’s done and the whole Boxing world knows it, they paid off Castillo, they cant pay off Mayweather so they gotta cheat!
So Sayeth Lito~

(13) Carlito says:

Hatton has to fights that both were paid enough to quit boxing, Kostyzu and Castillo. They both took dives and both could have beat the crap out of Hatton, Hatton has fought 43 bums, so what he’s in shape, he is virtually skilless, hes just in good shape, so he’ll get a cardio-vascular azz beating…lol
So Sayeth Lito!

I think Hatton is probably the closest challenger that can beat Mayweather. However speed can make or break you…and no one hasn’t really come close to breaking Mayweather speed. This is going to be a great fight, can’t wait.

The dvd on Hatton is inspirirational as well

Sorry fellas but I just have to chime in again regarding the De la Hoya commentary. First of all, there is no doubt that Oscar is done. His legacy will live on and prevail in the IBHOF. He was too old and too outclassed by Floyd but even so, Floyd did not look to be at the top of his game either. He did rock Oscar a few times but like a true champ Oscar showed the heart and stayed in there. Floyd strategically fought in close pinning him to the ropes but was not effective as he is outside. If my memory serves, Oscar hit Floyd with some jarring blows in the 3rd that TOTALLY changed the complexion of the fight and the pompous look on Pretty Boy’s mug. Had Oscar been in his prime say perhaps when he ruled the mid-to-late 90’s, he would have had the presence of mind and the stamina to follow thru with shots that could take Floyd’s head off. What alot of folks don’t know is that Oscar is a converted southpaw, hence the reason he (had) the killer left hook. He changed his brawling style to a more conventional boxer several years ago and that helped him stay out of the slugfests and create more longevity. Truth be told he always tires in the later rounds but in my opinion he just hasn’t quite been the same since the Trinidad loss. With all that said, I will concur that this is not a De la Hoya forum and we are closing in on a battle of two undefeated’s. Look back a few months ago to what happened to Jermaine Taylor getting KO’d by slugger Kelly Pavlik, proof that nobody is bulletproof. No matter what happens I hope that Floyd will give Margarito a shot because I feel that he should have been given the opportunity ahead of Hatton. Or perhaps can Floyd handle the size of undefeated 6′1″, 82 inch reach Paul the Punisher Williams? That I’d like to see. Smells like retirement looming or maybe he’ll move way down to fight Pacquiao. Ha! Either way, Mayweather’s days are numbered. I’ll say once more that I hope Floyd’s mouth gets busted up beyond repair, win or lose.

(16) FREDY says:

I dont think hatton can beat floid is a really great fighter hatton is not going to touch mayweather I think the only one can stop floid is someone big strong that he does not get tired son like de la hoya iknow that MARGARITO is not a famous boxer but if floid fights MARGARITO he will lose.

(17) Trizzy says:

you people are crazy, your makin mayweather’s head bigger then it already is. mayweather never went against somebody with this type of power in their punches that hatton has. if it wasnt for mayweather’s speed and stamina i would say hatton gets the KO but im goin for hatton by decision

(18) reynan says:

i think it will gonna be a hell of a fight. it would be speed vs. power. if mayweather would go atleast 6 rounds he will survive vicious grab attack by hatton. if he loses his stamina, he would end up kissing the canvass. i dont think it would be a draw. for me, hatton would have a fair advantage just like what we have witnessed taylor against the “ghost” pavlik.
