Mayweather-Hatton: Round-by-Round

Saturday December 8, 2007
Pre-Fight: As expected, crowd is behind Hatton. Referee is Joe Cortez.

Round One: Mayweather is able to land clean punches as Hatton moves forward. Hatton maintains pressure and knocks Floyd off balance. Hatton is warned for holding and hitting. Floyd is being forced to fight. Mayweather 10-9.

Round Two: Cortez twice stops action to warn both fighters to fight clean. Mayweather lands some single shots but also does a lot of holding. Hatton continues to press forward. Hatton 10-9

Round Three: Hatton tries to turn fight into a brawl but Mayweather's holding and Cortez' over-officiating continues to stop the action. Floyd lands a flush right that opens a big cut over Hatton's right eye. Mayweather 10-9

Round Four: Hatton remains the aggressor but is not overly effective. Mayweather lands clean single shots and briefly hurts Hatton in middle of round. Cortez is way too involved in the action. Mayweather 10-9

Round Five: Floyd fights most of round with his back on the ropes. Ugly round ... just like Hatton likes it. Hatton 10-9

Round Six: Mayweather turns back to Hatton along the ropes on ropes and Cortez takes a point from Hatton for hitting behind the head. Cortez needs to let them fight. Another tough round to score. Hatton is aggressor. Mayweather lands only clean punches of the round. Even 9-9

Round Seven: Hatton's cut remains a non-issue. Mayweather continues to land straight rights as Hatton comes in. Fight may be decided by who has more left in the tank in the final rounds. Mayweather 10-9

Round Eight: Floyd dominates round from beginning to end. Hatton appears hurt late in round. Hatton fights back as round ends but only shows toughness ... no effectiveness. Mayweather 10-9

Round Nine: Hatton getting easier to hit by the round. Hatton's in trouble unless Floyd suddenly tires ... and there's no reason to think that will happen. Mayweather 10-9

Round Ten: Mayweather knocks Hatton down with a huge left. Hatton beats the count but his legs are gone. Hatton holds on but Mayweather continues to land heavy punches. Cortez jumps in to stop the fight as Hatton goes down a second time. End comes at 1:35 of round ten.

Punch Stats: Total Punches: Mayweather - 129 of 329 (39%); Hatton - 63 of 372 (17%). Total Jabs: Mayweather - 29 of 72 (40%); Hatton - 11 of 63 (17%). Total Power Punches: Mayweather - 100 of 257 (39%); Hatton - 52 of 309 (17%).

Scoring: At the time of the stoppage, all three judges had Mayweather way ahead in the fight: 89-81, 89-81 and 88-82.

Post-Fight: Floyd praises Hatton. Larry Merchant tries to get Mayweather to say he wants to fight Miguel Cotto but Floyd says he's got nothing left to prove in boxing. Mayweather sounds more interested in becoming a promoter.

Hatton says he didn't stick to the game plan and got a little too "gung ho". Hatton says Mayweather is not the heaviest puncher he's ever faced but he's very clever and very accurate. Hatton apologizes to fans. It sounds like he wants to go back to 140. Paul Malignaggi would be a good opponent.

Loved this fight, Im a Hatton fan but what a punch from Floyd. After the fight he was a gentleman and he gets my full respect as a UK Boxing fan. I will say the Ref made Hatton lose it by taking that point away for that phantom punch. Hatton got to fired up about it even though it did not connect and I think thats what cost hatton the fight, the USA loves him and he made Floyd work more than any other fighter he has faced. Floyd has been beat once before, when he was Pro. so thats Ricky and him even on real records. Respect to Floyd and Hatton great fight, $50 well spent.

(2) Rick says:

I did not spend the money because of the person Floyd is. I coach amateur boxing and Floyd needs to become a man first to earn respect. It’s to bad that the person doesn’t live up to the skill. I hope Floyd will become a man and a role model one day for the kids I teach.

I think Flody had prove to the whole world that heis the current most talented boxer,he desevered to win .He made me happy, and shut the mouth of critics.

(5) Carlito says:

Mayweather punched all those prejudiced Brits that were hissing through our national anthem squarely in the mouth with that shot. Hatton was exposed, all that dam pushing and wrestling is not Boxing! Cortez broke up all that BS wrestling and made Hatton fight fairly and you see what happened. Hatton paid off Kostyzu and Castillo to get this fight. either of them would have easily dispatched Hatton in a fair fight! I believe the announcer Harold Letterman’s score card would have been the way the fight would have been scored if it went to a decision and I believe they would have stoled this fight from Mayweather if it went the distance. Thank God Floyd showed up for this fight, Floyd threw in comments about his brittle hands and lulled everyone to sleep for the impending KO, now that was pure genius! all I have to say is, Theres only oooonnneeee Mayweather! Only Onnnnneeee Mayweather! We’re walkin along, singing a song, walkin in Mayweather wonderland!!!!!!!!! Now then this is me laughing last, HAAAAAAA HAAAAAA HAAAAA!!!!!!
So Sayeth Lito!!!!!

I was disappointed in Ricky’s fight plan. His corner did not continually recommend left to the body and doubling to the head, in and out movement, and weaving and head movement. I think that he can beat Floyd but not with his corner behind him.

(7) YT Guilt says:

the evil empire(Uk/US) can not handle a man of african descent being his own man and not kowtowing to people of european descent. hatton’s record was trumped up to make a big fight. like floyd said, hatton didn’t fight 43 mayweathers. the world has never experienced an athelite of this caliber, dedicated to his craft. he talks-the-talk and walks-the-walk YOU F-ING HATERS!

(8) Annette says:

well, once again its been proven that Mayweather can get the job done.I believe that Mayweather would have knocked him out earlier;if hatton wouldn’t have been charging in.so sad. Hatton actually thought he could win.Wrong advice!!!

(10) Feral says:

Hmm.. Floyd is good, heck, he beat Zab(so did Tszyu,Spinks,Carlos What’s his name? and cotto)Judah, Oscar(I fight once a year, I was past my prime and I lost a razor thin decision)Dela Hoya and now Ricky (I’m not a natural welter to start, you all know this by the Collazo fight)Hatton. Duran would gladly rough Floyd up on the ropes, Leonard is just too sweet and Hearns would do a lot of HITTING on the little guy. Floyd is good, but not great. destroy Cotto or Williams (two natural welters in their primes that can real fight) and maybe floyd get more respect.

well now….the brits was incredible rude and nasty during the singing of our national anthem….booing but larry merchant didnt make any comment about that…B-Hops got booed by england even tho’ he was supporting Hatton(serves him right for sellingout to DLH…money whore….and finally FLOYD BUST THAT leprechuans @$$ beat him at his own game….even tho’ ricky was fighting dirty and floyd paid him back in kind he got his snot box busted in 10..but each round you saw floyd was actually hurting him with clean shots…and floyd was as pretty as ever even after the fight….but he cant win from winning or losing now the people are saying ohhh he should fight a B- fighter in Maragito…. please or fight Cotto….for what?1? floyd ride off into the sunset with your @$$ to the wind so the people that hate on you can smell what great shiiiiii you’ve dropped on them….

(13) Hooahday says:

The fight was lost for Hatton when Cortez was selected to Referee the match. As a fight fan of more than 50 years, I said to myself, “Oh my God” when Cortez was selected. It was obviously a Mayweather fix, and it worked.

To those that say Hatton lost the fight, I say, Hatton was fighting two people in the ring at the same time. Mayweather, whom he could beat if left alone for a minute, and Cortez, who jaunted and harrassed Hatton even when he got close to Mayweather. Watch the replay and pay close attention to Hatton constantly being harrassed to the point of paying more attention to Cortez than to his opponent.

Cortez won the fight from the opening bell. He should be banned from boxing for being the referree that most interferes with a boxing match.

After being worn down by fighting two opponents and not able to affect the damage on Mayweather that would have otherwise been the case - Hatton got caught with a hook at distance - a distance he would not otherwise have been at - were it not for Cortez.

Congratulations Cortez - you did your job…

Some have said that Cortez should not have been paid for this fight. To that I say - he was well paid for this fight!

like I said hatton is too small for foyd I think if floid beats cotto or margarito he deservs to be the fighter of the century.

(15) Rob Barcroft says:

well respect to both fighters but as much as it apins me to say it Floyd is the better fighter! No doubt The Hitman is great at light welterweight but Floyd is the king of welter… I think the fight was ruined by Cortez, however even before the fight i was expecting a Mayweather win on points. As a mad Hatton fan i would have loved him to KO Floyd but i can’t see anyone beating Mayweather, inside or ouside he is just to skilled.

December 11, 2007 at 9:16 pm
(16) Carlito says:

Cortez didnt win this fight, Mayweather nearly broke his jaw and cranium with a left hook form Kronk Gym in Detroit Michigan the ‘Check Hook”. Its called the “check Hook” because if you get caught with one it’ll cold “Check yo azz”…lol So get off Cortez, he did his job “masterfully”, he didnt let Hatton “foul” his way to a 12 round decision where Harold Letterman was obviously beating the tamberine for the plainly apparent fix. The knockout in front of Hatton’s “Big Mouthed Mammy” was classic…LMAO!!!!

So Sayeth Lito!

(17) PLUCK says:

Floyd whooped dat’ azz……..plain and simple! You racist azz fans of UK don’t know nothing about boxing. All you know is how to get drunk and show out in public. All of you, Letterman, Lampley, and Merchant can sing all you want now because Floyd rules. How can you treat Ricky like he won the fight and disrespect Floyd like that? Like I said you Brits mistake tbe pub for the boxing ring.

(18) jamal; says:

how can you floyd hatters say the ref got in the way of fight.he did is job this boxing not mma or wwe. floyd is the best man and he showed it. merchant is the floyd hatter as well. however i would love to see floyd fight cotto but he beat cotto worse then he did the hitman. who the goat need to fight is sugar shane even though he lost to cotto it would make a better fight and sugar shane actually has a chance at winning. just joking Theres only oooonnneeee Mayweather….Theres only oooonnneeee Mayweather

the goat
Theres only oooonnneeee Mayweather

i’ve never seen a refereee so clearly in the pocket of the promoter. crooked performance by cortez, ricky had to work up close, cortez just wouldnt let him. CORTEZ YOUR BENT!!

(21) Rashad says:

This fight was so predictable. Hatton is too small to be fighting the way he does against bigger people especially when he’s bumping up weight class. Seriously, who didn’t see Hatton getting his face rearranged? Floyd is too slick and fast for somebody to just walk in on him. Especially when he’s bigger. Floyd dominated him. Hatton needs to drop down and fight pacman. I think that might be one of the best fights ever…

January 19, 2008 at 9:59 am
(22) King Hamilton says:

The mayweather Hatton fight was not the fight to solitify Floyds reputation as the best. Hatton was over-rated from the jump and his skills could not match the expectations set for him… He was clearly outmatched… There is only one person worth Floyds time in the ring and that is Miguel Cotto. Point Blank! If you know boxing… You have no choice but to agree that Paul Williams would be completly domminated his height will account for nothing against the skills… Not just speed, but skills of Mayweather… Williams will soon be exsposed… Cotto is almost the total package, He doesnt bring everything to the table, but he brings alot and I believe that once Floyd adds him to the list he will silence all critics. “Oh Yeah” Shane Mosely??? Get serious… How can you say that Floyd has to come see you? You’re washed up… You said you’re gettin better, but yet you just lost another fight and everytime someone sees you and Bernard Hopkins who lost to “Winky” Both of yalls lips are glued to Oscars A## anyway… Floyd is the best!!!
