Poll: Who Should Mayweather Fight Next?

Tuesday December 11, 2007
Floyd Mayweather Jr. was already the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world before his fight with Ricky Hatton. Knocking out the previously undefeated Hatton in ten rounds wasn't easy but Pretty Boy was never in any real danger either. So what does he do for an encore?

After the fight, Mayweather hinted at retirement by saying he's bored with boxing. Remember, this is the same guy who 'retired' after he decisioned Oscar De La Hoya seven months ago. He'll fight again ... the only question is who?

Miguel Cotto, Kermit Cintron and Paul Williams are the other beltholders at 147. Shane Mosley and Antonio Margarito are viable opponents as well. Plus, there's always the option of a rematch with either De La Hoya or Hatton.

So vote in our poll and tell us who you want to see Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight in his next bout.

Who did Floyd beat??? He beat a true 140 guy who is all but 5′5″ tall. Floyd is great and I’m not going to take anything away from what he has accomplished. However, if he ever has a dream of truly going down as the greatest fighter ever (as I’ve heard him say) he’ll need to take some real action with the current welterweights. We’ve seen what he can do against smaller, less athletic opponents who aren’t much of a threat to him. Now, I think we all want to see what “the great Floyd” can do in there with a big welterweight with power! Mayweather/Cintron. I’d love to see the clash of 5′7 Mayweather and his athletic ability and boxing skills in there with a true boxer/banger with the most power in the division. I’ll simply ask you this question. Can Floyd knock out Cintron? My answer is no. So…the next question is “Can the great Floyd avoid Cintron’s power for an entire fight?” Again, my answer is “NO”. Come on Floyd…man up. If you truly think you are the greatest gift to boxing…stop fighting all the “over the hill” guys and the “smaller than you are” guys. That’s good, and some could even say impressive…but you’re not going to win over the masses without fighting the bigger, stronger fighters in your division. Are you “talk and show” or are you really “one of the great ones?” You have complete control over the answer! How do you want to be remembered?

junior your a hater but you do make a good point when you say he needs to fight some true 147 to call himself the greatest cintron is a banger with no heart mayweather would stop him late to like he did hatton one thing people need to understand is floyd mayweather jr has a chin if you watch his fights close he’s been hit flush by fighter that that hit hard and he has’nt been in seriuos trouble yet the only fighter who has a chance to beat him is paul williams a tall busy fighter that can fight on the inside and the outside has the heart of a champion and has very good on defense you got to be an over all skillful fighter to beat him period

Floyd has never been hit by anyone with pure KO power like Cintron. Floyd is running at a good time because he’d have some serious trouble with Cintron, Williams, Cotto, Margarito to name a few. His chin would wonder what the hell hit it when Cintron connects. After he woke up on the canvas he’d know this isn’t Judah, Hatton on any of the other true 140 guys Floyd seems to love to fight. He’s a smart man avoiding these guys…but a true champion? The best ever?? No Way!

unbelievable!!!!(junior) how can you say he never faced anyone with pure punching power when he fought an undefeated fighter with a record of 33 wins 0 losses and 27 ko’s and gave him a beating and his 1st loss..by way of..a KO a great fighter in DEIGO CORRALES…who was destroying every opponent… or a hard punching warrior with a record of 50-4-39 ko’s who had wins over (stevie johnston, cesar bazan, jorge paez, steve quinonez,) and he was in his prime Jose Luis Castillo,or goyo vargas, what i see is a case of ALI syndrome…he’s so good he’s hated then after retirement will be hailed as an alltime great………..people keep mentioning he should fight Maragito a descent b+ fighter..but look he recently took a boxing lesson from a guy fighting like it was the 2000 Olympics…or people mention Miguel Cotto a fighter i rate as an A fighter no + yet Mosley was a draw honestly he’s good but if floyd beats him their be some kind of excuse..he ran or he had the judge help him(like the brits are doing to cover up ricky the got hit whaaahappened hatton) and zab….well he had already lost to Floyd UD and Zab has freakish KO power he stunned Cotto several times before the lowblow wether it was a mistake or not…it benefited Cotto…please!!!! let’s be honest people most likely he’s hated because of his swagga…or his pseudo-Arrogance which is a mental edge to get under your skin and cause you to get emotional….see, deigo, zab, jose,or DeLa Hoya bigtime!!!! look he did what he was suppose to he’s been fighting for nearly 20 years it’s time he take a break or pull a Sugar Ray Leonard or (DLH)and only come out for mega millions since he is upper echelon….

(5) junior says:

You make some great points but…the 30-0 guy with all the KO’s is a true 140 guy. There is a big difference between that power and the power of a big 147 who could easily to to 54. Anyway…for the record…I don’t hate Floyd at all. I admire his talent but…if he wants to go down as the greatest…he needs to step up and step in the ring with one or more of the bigger guys (physically) in his weight class. If he chooses not to, I actually respect that from a business standpoint… but not from the perspective of someone who is trying to sell us that he’s the best ever.

(8) the truth says:

Mayweather-greatest active boxer living…who care if he fought the biggest in his division, he always fought the BEST no matter the weight so that is irrelevant and last time I checked he was ranked pound for pound the best so how is he not a true champion? stop hatin…but thats OK cuz anytime somebody make it to the top its always people that wanna put em down, which mean he doin somethin right

December 13, 2007 at 5:25 pm
(9) junior says:

Mayweather needs to fight the current 147 beltholders if he wants to lay claim to being one of the best ever…or as he has said…The best ever. I just wonder how he, or any of you, can accept this claim if he won’t fight Cintron, Williams, or Cotto??? Back in the day…the best would have taken all challengers. Floyd is very, very good…maybe even great but…I can’t see labeling him the “best” when he won’t fight the other champions in his own weight class. I’ll give him the “best” businessman…but not fighter. If he’s about business only…he is indeed the champion. If he’s about boxing, and showing that he’s the best boxer..then I challenge him to fight the other champions in the division.

I don’t think Mayweather should fight again. He has proved all he has to prove. I feel like he is the best pound for pound and if you don’t believe me look at his record. Retire at the age of 30, come on who hasn’t had that dream. All I have to say to my boi Floyd ‘Pretty Boy’ Mayweather is: You made it do what it do baby.

(11) fredy says:

Floid is the best fighter IN 140, but if he wants to fight and be the best in 147 he must fight a real welter fighter hatton was almost knot out in his last fight in welter come on, I not stupid ARE YOU BOYS

December 15, 2007 at 4:05 pm
(12) jamal says:

pretty boy is the best if he fights cotta and beats him they would say cotto is not as good as we thought but that is what floyd does he fights great fighters he just makes them look like b class fighters. the only guy out there who even has a slim chance at beating the pretty boy is paul williams cuz of his great size and his busy boxing style. he would give floyed fits. however the pretty boy would find a way to win cuz that is what he does. he cant be stoped

Theres only oooonnneeee Mayweather
Theres only oooonnneeee Mayweather

(13) junior says:

Hey Jamal…you are right. If he only fights Cotto and wins that fight…he won’t get full cred. that he deserves. Why? Because Cotto has been hyped and handled brilliantly but is not event the best welter out there. Cotto should fight Cintron. Williams should fight Margarito/Mosley/Other. Winner should fight winners and then Floyd should fight that guy. If he beats him…he earns the respect. He doesn’t get that if he just “picks” the guy he wants to fight.

(14) noirnoticvibe says:

Mayweathers…successor will be Cotto…i feel cotto is the better all around fighter…yeah maragito has power but that’s all sometimes that all you need but against cotto who with stood zab and mosley….he broke down an excellent undefeated BOXER in malinaggi…he’s been on a steady diet of quality fights that improves his skill…..mosley is older yeah…but he beat a game luis callazo who i thought beat hatton or draw with him depending on if you scored by compu or just regular ring generalship….cintron is talented but his loss to b fighter maragito set him back with me and as for williams and them long arms we see what cotto did to the boxer and boxer puncher he out jabbed a jabber and out fought a fighter he’s shown a complete repitoire’….and i went for mosley over cotto and felt that should of been a draw but reality is reality…..floyd is the best to do it at this stage of the game…where as maragito has losses to nobodies, cintron has a ko loss to him, williams fights nervous like the us pan-am games,Cotto has’nt made any excuse just fights an well he earned his wins wether by KO or Decision…..so i and i said i nominate Cotto as Mayweathers successor…but if they do ever fight my money is on money mayweather PBF….against all of them….Maweather A+ Cotto A Williams A- cintron A- and maragito B+…….you do the math

(15) Donald Wolberg says:

Mayweather is not much of a fighter; he just about went down from a shot by Hatton early in the fight and Hatton is a 140 pound little guy with lots of heart. The ref stopped Hatton from doing major inside damage early on when he was at his fastest and meanest. Hatton needed to get it done in the first few rounds. Mayweather is one of the most distasteful characters in a long time, now in the middle of a personality remake to appear friendly. I think Cotto can bang him hard and Shane would knock him out and is as fast, but those fights will not happen.
His will be a career soon forgotten for lack of real excitement and the sooner the better. Hatton should go back down to 140 and stick to home town fights.

(16) Rocky says:

Well Mayweather is great but the greatest I dont think so. He has too beat all the undefeated even close too his division then they can call him the best. Not just guys smaller than him bigger too !!slide up the table and go at errr !!!!!

(17) Rashad says:

I say Miguel because he has all the toys to beat Floyd. I honestly don’t like Oscar and I think he is really overrated. Everybody who he fights who is decent beats him. Cotto would destroy him and knock him out rather quickly I think. I think Cotto has all the tools to win that fight with floyd. He’s faster then Oscar, he a better well rounded athlete and he definitely is the harder puncher. I think he could do what Oscar did but be able to land more shots and take that split or possibly unanimous decision. Floyd isn’t going to be action packed like the Hatton fight unless he’s bigger and going against a technical disaster like Hatton. He would run but I think Cotto could cut him off and lands more shots to take the decision.
