Who Will De La Hoya Fight on May 3?

Wednesday January 23, 2008
Oscar De La Hoya is reportedly narrowing down his list of possible opponents for a May 3 fight. The Golden Boy says he plans to fight three times in 2008 as a "farewell" tour. He hasn't fought three times in a calendar year since 1999 so it remains highly unlikely he'll do so this year.

Nevertheless, it appears as if De La Hoya serious about fighting someone on May 3. To be considered, that someone will need to have some name recognition value (to help sell the fight), but also be a "safe" opponent (so as not to jeopardize a bigger payday in a September rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.. Team De La Hoya may have come up with someone who fits the bill perfectly: Steve Forbes. The same Steve Forbes who was the runner-up (to Grady Brewer) in the most recent season of The Contender (there's the name value). The same Steve Forbes who was fighting at 130 pounds as recently as 2004 and who has scored only nine KOs in 38 pro bouts (there's the safety factor).

Nothing against Forbes, but the only scenario in which this is a somewhat competitive bout is if De La Hoya doesn't train properly and completely looks past this fight to his rematch with Mayweather. There is precedent for such a scenario. In 2004, De La Hoya, in preparation for his fight with Bernard Hopkins, took a "tune-up" against Felix Sturm and turned in the worst performance of his career.

ESPN reports that other opponents under consideration include Paulie Malignaggi (five KOs in 25 fights) and Dmitriy Salita (never faced anyone above club-level opposition).

I have never been a fan of DelaHoya….i just couldnt take his phoniness(in my opininon)and fake smile however he has faced everyone there is to face for him….a who’s who list of other fighters great names and legends so if he wants a fairwell tour of 2 easy fights …so be it…however i think he needs to rematch Strum and hell finally give Ike Quartey his rematch…then fight Floyd(which i believe he will lose again)…but then again his final fight could be dangerous against floyd….or maybe he’ll fight Strum, Miguel Cotto on whom i believe he can outbox and DLH does carry a lethal left hook, and then PBF…. well i am not going to make any foul calls DLH is always dangerous wether i like him or not he can box and fight he does have great KO power he’s strong as well as powerful..he is very capable….i wish this twat good luck honestly

Why these over the hill guys continue to fight comes down to two factors: ego and money. Oscar has only one option this time, and that is to let it all hang out and take on Mayweather and run him down and trounce him. Nothing else would be satisfactory and it would be the only logical option for Oscar to reclaim his status.

Every fighter has made the choice and decision to fight. Right! Yet, not every fighter has the will to fight everyone who comes along.
I mean to say that there is – for some fighters – Way too much of “pciking very carefully” just who they will fight… and when they should fight certain “feared” fighters – if ever!
I think De La Hoya is a beautiful fighter… and a business man. Good move… yet it is becoming boring to watch him fight.
I agree that he shoud fight Ike Quartey. Someone who would like to fight him… someone who wants to fight him.
I still would love to see Chavez JR. meet him.
Maybe off topic a bit… I think that there should be more promoters and ore fight cards held and the “other” fighters being given more exposure… so we (I)can make better analysis of who should or who we’d like to see “get Tested” for true!!
I like De La Hoya and I can’t say that is any fighter that I don’t ike… I think John Ruiz is about the only fighter that I really did not like watching.
I love watching Mayweather and truly admire and repect Ricky Hatton.
I really don’t care to see De La Hoya fight anyone except Chavez Jr!
I think ego is a prolem when fighters use it to act unafraid… in other words – cause they fear that certain other fighter.
Thanks for listening to my ramblings.

There is always someone hating on Oscar. Oscar is one of the best fighters of all time. He’s fought every 1 they put in front of him who was regarded as the #1 or best. I think whoever he fights before his rematch with Floyd he’ll beat. And im a big Floyd fan, but Floyd didnt beat Oscar convincingly the first fight. That first fight was more of a draw.
