Quintana Shocks Paul Williams

By , About.com GuideFebruary 10, 2008

Follow me on:

After dominating Antonio Margarito, Paul Williams was seen as a potential threat to either Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Miguel Cotto. Scratch that ... at least for now. Carlos Quintana took the WBO welterweight title from the previously unbeaten Williams by repeatedly landing clean, heavy shots throughout the bout. Yes, that's the same Carlos Quintana who was blasted out in five rounds by Cotto in his previous shot at a title.

The 6'1" Williams put on 17 pounds between the weigh-in and fight time but conditioning wasn't his problem as the 26-year-old threw his usual high volume of punches. However, his punches lacked snap and Quintana had no problem penetrating William's porous defense, opening cuts over both of the now-former champion's eyes.

I tend to agree with the Harold Lederman's scorecards on HBO but this time he and I were watching different fights. Lederman gave the fight to Williams 115-113. Fortunately for Quintana, all three judges saw the fight I saw and gave it to the challenger 116-112, 116-112 and 115-113. Credit goes to judges Jose Cobian, Tony Grebs and Michael Pernick for doing an honest, competent job and not finding ways to score the fight for the higher-profile, more marketable fighter.

On the undercard, welterweight prospect Andre Berto remained undefeated with a one-sided sixth round TKO of Michel Trabant. Berto's superior speed and power were too much for the completely outclassed Trabant. It's time for Berto to step up and fight someone who is a threat to hit him back. Also on the undercard, heavyweight prospect Chris Arreola stayed undefeated by stopping journeyman Cliff Couser in less than two-minutes of round one.

not sure what fight letterman was looking at but cantana was winning this fight from the begining with the right hand. williams havent a fought a south paw in a long time and cantana esposed williams. But a lot of this lost was williams brought on himself. for williams I think this wasnt his night….I have been watching williams a long time especially against an impressive win over margarito. What I saw tonight was a williams that wasnt sharp, fast with his jab , and clean connects… to add to this he put on 17 pounds after weight-in which I think cost him the fight tonight. From here williams needs to laylow, regroup and strengthen his punching power, regain that speed and hunger he has to win. I cant say it enough, williams very very sluggish

Sorry, but Williams didn’t dominate Margarito. I thought Margirito won the fight. It was close.

I almost did not watch the fight after all the Williams hype–why isn’t Teddy Atlas doing HBO fights? Teddy and Manny are the best fight guys–all else is fluff. I wondered why Lennox was so for Williams. It was obvious that Williams made the classic error-he believed his own hype, came out cold and underestimated the opponent’s will to win.

Quintana was determined, and smart and wanted the win. It was grossly unfair, I thought, that Williams was allowed to come in at 164 or what ever it was…he was no welterweight and it makes Quintana’s win all the more impressive. Williams had remarkably little power I thought and I can’t see him going up against opponents with a real kick.

Once again aggression, courage, determination and hard work trumped native skills and wolf-talk. Thanks Carlos for a great performance. I’ll be watching for your next fight.

Quintna fought a great fight and I tip my hat to him and take nothing away from him, however, Williams seemed sluggish to me. He did not come close to his usual 100 punches per round. Some of that was probably the result of Quintana’s attack but Williams also was way out of rythm too. Even though he does not say so, I think the weight for Williams was an issue. He re-hydrated all the way back up to 164 by fight night and that will take a toll on anyones body. I think William’s should start to move up in weight. Starting with 154LBS. He should test the waters there first with a easy fight or two before going after a belt. Either way, he will be back.
