Boxing Roundup: Klitschkos, Calzaghe-Jones, More ...

Wednesday July 9, 2008
Current WBC heavyweight champ Sam Peter and WBC champion 'emeritus' Vitali Klitschko may finally meet on October 4 in Berlin. It's equally likely that Klitschko will get hurt between now and then and the fight will be delayed ... again.

41-year old former featherweight champ Kevin Kelley - in his first bout since November 2006 - scored a ten round unanimous decision over Jaime Palma in Las Vegas. Scores were 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93.

Light heavyweights Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones Jr. are slated to meet on September 20. The rumored site for the pay-per-view event is New York's Madison Square Garden.

Former heavyweight contender Michael Grant returns to the ring on Friday night in Philadelphia against Demetrice King. Grant, 35, has won six straight but those wins are spread over five years and they've come against mediocre opposition.

IBF heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko defends his title against Tony Thompson on Saturday night in Hamburg, Germany (live on HBO at 4:30pm ET/1:30pm PT and replayed at 10pm ET/PT). Thompson, 36, has won 27 straight dating back to 2000. Plus, at 6-5 and nearly 250 pounds, he's roughly the same size as Klitschko. Nevertheless, there appears little chance of the title changing hands. Thompson's best wins came against opponents (Dominick Guinn, Timor Ibragimov, Luan Krasniqi) that aren't in Klitschko's league.

Yes finally the return of Roy Jones in top form….this will be his crowning achievement and we can get pass the 3 losses (2 to Tarver 1 to Johnson)not looking past Calzahge…….Yyyyeaaah i am but in the sense that RJ will return and stop Cal in the 11th by TKO…while both are considerably fast i edge it to Roy both have 12 rounds stamina as for Power.. Roy all night…defense i give it to Roy while offense is Calzahge’s defense…neither have faced opponents with the hand speed of each other..however Roy has faced better fighters..in wins and losses Cal possesses a slight mental edge with his undefeated hall of fame record…but if this is the hungry roy cal will be an imported snack for a beast

Roy is washed up and the fight with Calzahge is not too exciting for me…I would much rather see Calzaghe fight Pavlik or Taylor, but a fight with Roy would gaurantee Calzaghe a great amount of recoginiton after he defeats Roy with his quicker hands and superior technique, and considering the glass jaw of Roy I wouldnt be too suprised to see him taste the canvas the same way that Jeff Lacy did

Joe all the way, Roy JR is the best way for Joe to bow out, Great pay day against a once brilliant fighter. Joe to win by stoppage around round 8 after a tricky start. I just hope Joe sticks with retirement and doesnt get tempted by fighting pavlic.

Joe..faster than Roy? Glass jaw??? hwy becasue he got caught? Whoever thinks that is an idiot. Roy may not have had the killer instinct he needed to win a few times but to direspect what he has done and has acocmplished is an embarresment to your ability to commnent!

I think what he means is that in this day and age Calzaghe throws faster flurries than Jones being that Roy is FAR past his prime and his back to back KOs at the hands of Tarver(2nd round) and Glen Johnson was the glass jaw he was referring to. Face it, it isnt the late 90s or early 2000s anymore and Roy Jones legacy will live on forever but his days of being a great fighter are over…it is very obvious that your infatuation with Roy may be clouding your judgement and turning you into an idiot.
