Toney Scores Controversial TKO over Rahman

Friday July 18, 2008
Heavyweight James Toney was awarded a controversial third round TKO over Hasim Rahman in the not-highly-anticipated rematch of their 2006 draw. Rahman won the first round and the second was relatively even but an accidental clash of heads early in the third opened a cut over Rahman's left eye. The former champ was bothered by the cut and ate a good number of right hands over the remainder of the round. After the third round ended, Rahman told the ring doctor that he couldn't see out of his left eye so the doctor had no choice but to advise the referee to stop the fight.

Rahman clearly thought the fight would be ruled a no contest as less than four rounds had been completed ... and that seemed to be the intial call as the cut was correctly ruled the result of an accidental butt. Nevertheless, whoever was in charge apparently decided that since it was Rahman who insisted he could not continue - and not the doctor ruling that the cut was bad enough to stop the fight - that Toney was the winner by TKO.

It's always unfortunate when cuts impact the outcome of a fight but it was hard to have much sympathy for Rahman as he admitted in the post fight interview that he would have continued if the cut had been caused by a punch rather than a butt. Rahman assumed that the fight would be ruled a no contest so he decided he wasn't "going to fight with one eye". You know what they say about assuming . . .

In his post-fight comments, the always classy Toney called Rahman a quitter and challenged the entire heavyweight division: "Quit hiding them bums from me ... Klitschko, you're a bum and your sister Vitali".

Rahman is a big P–sy i seen James Toney with a horrific gash over his eye against Tim Little go out and KO dude in the 4th when he needed it most..Marvin Hagler against Tommy Hearns ..these are the badges of warriors..and Rahman proved he wasnt against a guy who use to weigh 158LBS. good look for Toney who i thought was much the aggressor and busier and landed more anyway and i think Rahman knew it…

Rahman took an easy way out. The previous post about Toney and Tim Littles was right on the money. For Rahman to think it would be a no-contest, just makes it more apparent he wanted “out”. Toney is a great. His downfall has always been his conditioning. If Toney weighs 220 to 225, he can give all the “champions” trouble. He could certainly beat a Chagaev,Maskaev,Ibragimov, and Ruiz. They arent all champs but they are the rated fighters ahead of Toney. The Klitschko’s would be difficult and so would Valuev because of just their sheer size. Toney is smart and if he is in shape,he would find a way to touch them too.

I’d like to see Toney take on Haye. Both were great at lower weights and are true action fighters all the way. Let the winner meet Vlad for a real heavyweight ass-kicking. Under Emmanuel Stewart Klitchko hs become a complete boxer.

James is in shape and one the the hardest fighters to hit..To see a man of 40 do what he has done is pure magic..watch him destroy Tony Thompson in Dec..
