Update: Oscar Diaz Likely to Survive
Dr. David Jimenez, the neurosurgeon at San Antonio's University Hospital who performed the two-hour procedure on the left side of Diaz's head, is pleased with his progress: "Overall, I think ultimately he should survive the injury and should recover. I think the fact that he's young, the fact that he's healthy, the fact that he doesn't have a whole lot of medical problems, is on his side. He's gone through the most severe stage, which is good. But one has to be aware it could still turn at any time".
We'll continue to update this story as additional information becomes available.

It’s been a month. how about a diaz update? It’s disgraceful that all the boxing web sites have dropped the story. just disgraceful.
I agree 100%. ESPN dropped the ball on this as well as they promised to give an update on Diaz on each Wednesday and Friday Night Fight broadcast, which they haven’t done recently.
Here’s the latest info I was able to track down (from fightnews.com):
San Antonio welterweight Oscar Diaz remains in critical condition. The gutsy Diaz, who, after taking an 11-round beating from Delvin Rodriguez, July 16, collapsed in the ring between rounds, due to bleeding in his brain. He underwent surgery and a portion of the left cranium was removed to reduce the swelling. It’s unknown whether he will be able to make a complete recovery, let alone, a partial one, though doctors say it’s still too early to tell.
Diaz is forgotten.Since Teddy is gone to the joke in china, thats not boxing, there has been nothing said.WE see when Teddy Altlas returns
No recent information on the condition of Oscar Diaz. What gives ??? Unforgivable.
Will someone please give us an update on Oscar Diaz? How quickly the boxing world forgets one of it’s own
Every day I search for new information on Oscar’s recovery, but for the past month have found absolutely nothing. I am very disappointed that ESPN failed to keep their promise to keep us updated on Oscar on their boxing broadcasts. Now they won’t be broadcasting boxing for awhile, so boxing fans concerned about Oscar will just be left with their failure. That is unforgiveable.
It has been almost two months now, and no recent update on the condition of Oscar Diaz. I have been a boxing fan since the original FRiday Night Fights ( GIllette BLue Blades ) and have watched boxing devolve into a pathetic shadow of the once great sport it was. Too many weight classes, too many recognizing authorities and too many Pay for View entrepreneurs. Sad ending to a once great sport….
You should have waited just two more days.
Oscar Diaz was in a coma for the last two months.. there’s not much to update in that sense, because there was no change. He opened his eyes today and is now breathing without the aid of a ventilator.
Now, as for Boxing’s “glory days”, there always were these type of stories going on in Boxing, it’s just now that you have eight hundred channels, you know about it. Instead of some bar in Arkansas and the associated boxing league that it shares with ten other bars that no one ever hears about, it’s all capable of being televised.
any updates? i can’t find anything on the web
What gives concerning Oscar Diaz ? No news more recent than September 17th 2008. Today is January 19, 2009. Six months have passed since he was carried from the ring and not even ESPN mentions him anymore. Speaking of ESPN, their recent friday night fights are so bad, that I can say that I saw better in the parking lot at high school when I was a boy. THe UFC presentations are looking better and better these days.
Its been 7 months since that night, being at the fight and at the hospital was surreal and unbelievable. As of today he is in ICU with not much progress. Oscar is my friend and I ask all out there to pray for him and his family.
Oscar hasn’t really shown a lot of improvement. Very very slow recovery. Still can’t talk. Please keep him in your prayers.
