Only One Medal For U.S. Boxing Team

Sunday August 17, 2008
The U.S. boxing team came to Beijing with nine boxers and high hopes of bringing home multiple medals. Scratch that plan. In what has been a non-stop nightmare for the U.S. squad, only one fighter will win a medal. By narrowly winning his quarterfinal bout, heavyweight Deontay Wilder has assured himself no worse than a bronze medal from the 2008 Games. Welterweight Demetrius Andrade lost his quarterfinal bout. Everyone else on the U.S. team was eliminated prior to the quarterfinals.

The ref’s and judges have made it most difficult for the non-Asian boxers. The least experienced boxer for the USA is the only one left. His medal round fight is quite an achievment. A scoring system that does not show the scores after each round is important. Ahead after 3 means the one ahead will run in the 4th.

I agree, the scoring system is so broken it’s not worth watching. It’s such a diluted form of boxing that if you’re considering a professional career it would actually be handicap to win in the Olympics.
